Film "Passing Fancy" - Featuring SAC Visiting Artist & Benshi Ichiro Kataoka
The first collaboration with actor Sakamoto Takeshi, who plays widower Kihachi and would go on to play other fathers in A Story of Floating Weeds and An Inn at Tokyo. Kihachi raises his son all alone. He meets a girl named Harue, who has nobody to rely on, and places her under his friend Otome's care. With time, Kihachi's love toward Harue grows, but Harue is in love with another man. Kihachi's son Tomio, suffering from bullies at his school, is annoyed by his father's struggle to win her love. Passing Fancy reveals Ozu's increasing skill at directing children: as son Tomio, he recast the unforgettable rapscallion from I Was Born, But...--- Tokkan Kozo --- and Dozo's interaction with Sakamoto is terrifically wry, their father-son reversals handled with slapstick aplomb. (Silent with background music.) Read More

Film "Inn at Tokyo" - Featuring Live Narration by Ichiro Kataoka & Live Music by little bang theory
Kihachi is a father of two boys with neither a job nor a place to live. While wandering around Tokyo during recession, Kihachi and his sons encounter a woman named Otaka and her daughter. The kids are quick to make friendly acquaintances. Watching them play together, Kihachi and Otaka feel happy, as though they’d returned to their childhood days. The script is credited to “Uinzato Mone,” the Japanese pronunciation of “Without Money”; in fact, it was written by Ozu and two friends during a period when the director was short on cash. This was Ozu’s last silent masterpiece, but it shows the influence of the sound cinema. Ozu writes, “Around that time…there was no place for silents anymore. Although An Inn in Tokyo was a silent film, I had no choice but to adopt the method of sound films. For example, in a conversation scene between two persons, I ventured to superimpose character A’s lines on a close-up of character B.” Read More
