Interested Graduate students for admission into the U-M Department of Screen Arts & Cultures Ph. D program,

PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING INSTRUCTIONS CAREFULLY:


Application

The application process for the Ph.D. program in Screen Arts & Cultures is administered by the Horace H. Rackham School of Graduate Studies.

The application deadline is December 15 of each year. (All materials from the applicant must be received by December 15).  You must submit your online application and other required materials by that date to be considered for admission to the Ph. D. program for the following academic year.   This includes transcripts and GRE scores. Committments are made shortly after the deadline for both financial aid and space in the program.

Applicants must apply online. The process is easy, very secure, and allows you to save your work and complete the application over time.  

Procedures for submitting an online application:

1. Go to the online application website: https://apply.embark.com/Grad/UMich/Rackham/ProgramA/36

2. Set up an account: This allows you to work on your application securely, to save work and to return later to complete and submit the application online.

3. Read the instructions: Review the application instructions.  They will help you complete your application correctly and submit it successfully.

4.  Complete the application form:  Answer the questions carefully and accurately and include your statement of purpose.

5.  Check the Application Inspector:  Double-check to make sure all required questions are answered before you submit the application.

6.  Pay the application fee:  Choose how you would like to pay the application fee.

7.  Submit the application:  Review your application one last time and submit it online.

8.  Receive an email confirmation:  Once you submit your application, you will receive an email to confirm that it has been successfully sent to the department and the Rackham Graduate School.

9.  Please submit the following online:

  • Online application
  • Personal Narrative/Statement of Purpose: the personal narrative and statement of purpose can be combined into a single document. The statement of purpose should address your reasons for applying to a doctoral program in film, digital media and television studies, in general, and the University of Michigan's Department of Screen Arts & Cultures, in particular; this should include your previous coursework and/or professional experience. The personal narrative should be an autobiographically-informed essay that will enable the graduate committee to understand your desire to pursue academic study in Screen Arts & Cultures.
  • Two critical writing samples: the length of each writing sample should be ten to twenty pages.
  • Three letters of recommendation

10. Have the following sent directly to the Department of Screen Arts & Cultures. The request for transcripts, GRE scores, TOEFL, and MELAB scores should be made at least six weeks before the deadline date.

  • Official transcript
  • GRE scores: use code 1839
  • TOEFL or MELAB scores: International applicants who are non-native speakers of English must also include TOEFL or MELAB scores and an official translation of transcripts into English, if necessary.  In addition, international applicants must send to the Horace H. Rackham School of Graduate Studies* the Statement and Certification of Finances and a second official copy of all transcripts.  Non-native speakers of English should also provide the Graduate School with an official report of their TOEFL or MELAB scores.
