History of the Festival of New Works

1999 | 2000 | 2001 | 2002| 2003| 2004

Artistic Director: Frank Gagliano (1999-2001)

Managing Director: Mary Lou Chlipala (1999-2004)

The University of Michigan's Festival of New Works was a non-profit organization dedicated to the development of dramatic writing--plays, musicals, and screenplays--by contemporary professionals from around the US and Canada and student writers with a range of interests and voices. The Festival was initiated by the Department of Screen Arts & Cultures, Department of English Language and Literature, and the Department od Theatre and Drama in 1999. Using the 150-seat Trueblood Theatre in the Frieze Building, the Festival presented three new works each season: a student or alumni screenplay, a professional playwright's new play and a new musical. Simultaneously, the Frieze's 90-seat Arena Theatre served as the venue for new U-M student plays or screenplays. The Arena Theatre series was a totally student driven series: actors, directors, and writers. This series led by all students was called the "Arena Company."
