The Department of Screen Arts & Cultures offers a variety of awards focusing in three areas: scholarly research and writing; film, video, television, or digital media production; and screenwriting.

Fall Term Awards and Endowments:


Garnet R. Garrison Scholarship:

Established in 1978 on the occasion of Professor Garrison's retirement, the scholarship was the result of endowment gifts from his former students and colleagues at the University of Michigan. At the recommendation of professor Garrison this award(s) is for Denior Honors candiates to help defray the cost of preparing the Honors thesis - either research costs or the costs of a creative production project or screenplay.

Alice Webber Glover Scholarship Award:

Established in 1976 in honor of Alice Webber Glover, these competitive scholarships are intended to help with special coasts associated with the writing and/or production of student film, video, or digital media projects.

Trueblood Fellowship Award:

In 1921, students of Professor Thomas Trueblood honored him by establishing the Trueblood Fund. Today, the Trueblood Fellowship is used to support students - both undergraduate and graduate - involved in the performance aspects of film, television, or video art.

The Leo Burnett Foundation Grants Program:

Funded by the Leo Burnett Foudation, this grants-program offers support to students who show an expressed interest in communications media and how they functionin a market economy. Research and production projects that explore and illuminate the role film or television in a market economy are eligible.

Leonard and Eileen Newman Prize for Dramatic Writing:

The Newman Prize is a $1,000 award.

Sydney J. Winer Scholarship for Internship Support:

The Winer Scholarship is for a summer (May-August) internship to help defray the cost of the internship in the entertainment industry.

Peter and Barbara Benedek Award for Best Screenwriting:

The Benedek Screenwriting Award is a $2,500 award.

Peter and Barbara Benedek Prize for Best TV Script:

The Benedek TV Script Prize is a $2,500 award.
