Abel has taken a circuitous route to become a historian of silent cinema: an undergraduate student in Forestry and Wildlife Management and then English, a doctoral student in Comparative Literature, and a partly self-trained scholar of cinema studies and cultural studies. He came to the University of Michigan from Drake University in 2002 as the Robert Altman Collegiate Professor of Film Studies and served as department chair (2005-2009) and graduate program director (2003-2006, 2008, 2010-2011).
