Aswin Punathambekar's research and teaching revolve around globalization, media industries and production cultures, media convergence, media history, and public culture with a focus on South Asia and the South Asian diaspora. He is the author of From Bombay to Bollywood: The Making of a Global Media Industry (NYU Press, forthcoming), co-editor of Global Bollywood (NYU Press, 2008), and co-editor of Television At Large in South Asia (2012). Aswin's research also examines online fan communities that cohere around different aspects of film and television (for e.g., fans of A. R. Rahman, the TV show Indian Idol) in order to map the dynamics of participatory culture in South Asia and the South Asian diaspora. He also serves as Assistant Editor of Media, Culture and Society.
