Damon R. Young trained in film and media studies and critical theory at UC Berkeley, after completing degrees in literature and visual culture (University of Sussex), and gender and cultural studies (University of Sydney). He writes about French cinema, gender and sexuality in culture, and film and new media theory. His current project explores how French and US cinema in a wide range of genres made sex more public during and after the 1960s, bringing the body and its pleasures into a new, and newly complex, relation to "the social."
He has co-edited two collections in queer studies: a special issue of GLQ in which queer theorists reflected on the nature of "bonds" beyond traditional concepts of love and desire and even beyond the category of the human, and a forthcoming special section on current queer approaches in film, TV and digital media studies.
His next project will explore how interactive media technologies challenge current theories of spectatorship, through a focus on documentary practices of self-portraiture and self-fashioning in the digital era.
