Stashu Kybartas’ interests in film and video range from making documentary and experimental films to researching and teaching documentary and avant-garde film studies. He began his career at the University of Michigan in 1999, after teaching at Hampshire College at Amherst, Massachusetts and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. His study and work focus on issues affecting the working class and gays and lesbians and their representation. Among the concerns that can be found in his work are the ways in which media and formal historical accounts distort or eliminate entirely the stories of oppressed and marginal groups.
These concerns led him to combine his traditional fine arts training in painting and sculpture with storytelling using the popular mass media forms of photography, film, and video. Recently, he has been exploring the possibility of using digital media and, specifically, the html capabilities of the World Wide Web for producing online interactive documentaries.
Kybartas has had residencies and taught abroad numerous times and is an advocate for international education. He is committed to the idea that a good liberal arts education is essential to the undergraduate student studying Screen Arts and Cultures.
