Production courses in the Deaprtment of Screen Arts & Cultures are integrated into the students study of the history, aesthetics and theory of the moving image. A wide variety of courses are offered in all phases and genres of production. Courses are offered in film, video, television and digital arts. The program is oriented to teach all genres including dramatic narrative, documentary as well as experimental and personal work. Students are expected to master fundamental production techniques as they apply to their conceptual goals.
Recent offerings in the program include digital animation, intermediate and advanced courses in video and film and scriptwriting. Cross-disciplinary courses where production and theory are taught together are also offered. These have included television sitcoms and documentary film. Most recently the program has begun to develop a course on the study and production of digital moving image.
Although the specific interests and works of the active media arts faculty sets a strong example, students will study methods and techniques used by image-makers from the art world, TV, Hollywood, the Web and from diverse cultures, worldwide. For their own production use, our students have access to excellent technical resources, staff and facilities. The animating curricular focus of our production course is one in which students learn to effectively integrate their personal vision and aesthetic convictions within the context of an interdisciplinary studies program.
