In September 1996 the Charles D. /Christella D. Moody South Africa Initiative Fund was established by Associate Vice Provost Lester Monts. The fund was established to help support students from the University of Michigan for travel, study and research in South Africa and conversely to fund students from South African institutions to study and do research at the University of Michigan. Since its inception, numerous students and faculty have taken advantage of this program.

Purpose:

To contribute to the development and dissemination of knowledge critical to post-apartheid South Africa's capacity to grow, develop and progress.

Who is Eligible:

University of Michigan Graduate Students, Doctoral Students and Faculty currently pursuing or interested in pursuing research or an internship in South Africa.

Graduate students and faculty from South African universities.

Moody Fellowship

For three months during the summer, UM graduate students will work in South African agencies on projects that involve a combination of research and service.

The South Africa Initiatives Office provides small grants for University of Michigan faculty and graduate students to conduct independent and collaborative research in South Africa.

Moody Exchange Program

The Moody Exchange Scholars Program is designed to assist South Africa in cultivating its next generation of scholars by bringing them to the University of Michigan for periods of up to three months.
