The University of Michigan Center for Russian and East European Studies (CREES) is one of the nation’s foremost institutes for interdisciplinary research and training on Russia, Central and Eastern Europe, Central Asia, and the Caucasus. A constituent unit of the U-M International Institute, CREES is currently one of twenty U.S. Department of Education-supported National Resource Centers for this broad world area. Regional strengths include Russia, Central Europe (especially Czech Republic and Poland), Southeastern Europe (notably former Yugoslavia), Central Asia, and the Caucasus.

The Center:

  • Has over 60 outstanding affiliated faculty area specialists and visiting scholars who offer 150 courses each year on the business, cultures, demography, economics, history, languages, law, literatures, politics, public policy, and social organization of the region as well as study abroad programs in Poland and St. Petersburg, Russia;
  • Offers interdisciplinary REES B.A., undergraduate minors, REES M.A., concurrent B.A./M.A., graduate certificate, and graduate-level dual degree programs with professional schools in business, law, natural resources and environment, and public policy;
  • Administers a range of student funding opportunities, including FLAS Fellowships, conference travel awards, and grants to support research and internships in the region;
  • Organizes over 50 public events each year such as lectures, conferences, films, and mini-courses, many in collaboration with other U-M units;
  • Supports ongoing development of the University’s library collections which contain well over 775,000 items on the region; and
  • Serves as a regional center for expertise on the former Soviet Union and Eastern Europe providing instructional and informational services to schools and colleges, media, and businesses in Michigan and the Midwest.

Barbara A. Anderson, professor of sociology (Soviet/post-Soviet social and demographic change); Zvi Gitelman, professor of political science and Preston R. Tisch Professor of Judaic Studies (Soviet/post-Soviet and East European politics, ethnopolitics, and Jewish studies); Michael D. Kennedy, professor of sociology (Soviet-type and post-communist societies, energy security in Europe and Eurasia); Valerie Kivelson, professor of history (early modern Russia); William G. Rosenberg, Alfred G. Meyer Collegiate Professor of History (the Russian revolution); and Ronald G. Suny, professor of history (Russian, Soviet and post-Soviet history and politics).
