2005 Winter Courses

Czech 142, Four Credits
Tuesday/Thursday 2:30 – 4:30 p.m.

Czech 142 is the continuation of first year Czech language course in which the students also learn about Czech culture. It aims at developing basic skills, speaking, listening, reading and writing. Communicative Czech Textbook and Workbook by Ivana Rašková and Magdalena Pintarová that has been used in class in fall offers many exercises. Dictations, grammar and pronunciation exercises are a regular part of every class. Homeworks are assigned twice a week. We will also pay attention to Czech literature and arts. At the end of the semester, a contemporary Czech film will be shown and discussed.

Czech 242, Four Credits
Tuesday/Thursday 10 a.m. – 12 p.m.

Czech 242 is the continuation of second-year Czech course. We will continue to practice speaking, listening, reading and writing and build on what we have learned during the fall semester. Excerpts from the work of Czech writers will be read and discussed. More emphasis will be given to conversational skills and the difficult parts of Czech grammar, such as difficult Czech verbs, reflexive passive, the matter of nouns gender, sentence structure, etc. Homework is assigned on a regular basis; dictations and spoken or written grammar exercises are part of every class. Czech culture and contemporary events will be discussed. A film will be shown at the end of the semester.

Czech 480 One – Four Credits
Supervised Czech reading
This course is an advanced course, offered on individual basis. It concentrates on reading Czech texts chosen by the student according to the field and subject of his study.
