Note to Instructors
by E. Wampuszyc

To learn the locative case, students must be aware of the following concepts:

  • hard, soft and hardened consonants
  • alternations

The locative case of nouns is particularly challenging for students because of the many consonant and vowel alternations that occur. Here we provide a concise, one page summary of the locative endings and alternations for students' reference. At the bottom of the page, there is a link to a flow-chart, which guides students through the formation of the locative case. This method is particularly helpful in the beginning stages of teaching the locative and can be used in conjunction with communicative exercises.

When teaching the locative case, introduce one ending at a time and practice forming the locative case using old vocabulary. It is helpful to categorize vocabulary according to endings and alternations. Using flashcards is an excellent method for drilling this case.
