Verb Conjugation: -ę, -esz

There are numerous ways of classifying the -ę, -esz conjugation. For now, it is best to break this conjugation down into five groups. Begin by learning the meaning/conjugation of the verbs in boldface. Eventually, learn all the verbs listed in this material.

Group 1:

-ować (-iwać, ywać) type verbs

Group 2:

one syllable (or short) verbs

Group 3:

-wać verbs

Group 4:

verbs with stem alternations

Group 5:

irregular verbs

Basic -ę, -esz endings
-ę, -esz verbs all have the same basic endings in their conjugation. A large number of them are characterized by an additional “j” in the stem of the verb. The main difference between the 5 groups is either 1) the infinitive ending that is dropped -or- 2) the consonant alternations which may occur in the verb conjugation.

Once you have determined the stem of the verb however, the basic endings are as follows:

1. (ja)
2. (ty) -esz
3. on -e

1. (my) -emy
2. (wy) -ecie
3. oni

 

-am, -asz -em, -esz -ę, -esz -ę, -isz/-ysz
