Professor Makin's research interests include Tsvetaeva, the life and works of Nikolai Kliuev, and contemporary Russian writing and culture. Professor Makin teaches courses in nineteenth- and twentieth-century Russian literature and culture
Professor Makin is the author of Marina Tsvetaeva: Poetics of Appropriation (Oxford: Oxford University Press, 1993; Russian translation, Moscow, 1997), and is the co-editor, with Catriona Kelly and David Shepherd, of Discontinuous Discourses in Modern Russian Literature (Macmillan and St. Martin's, 1989), and, with Jindrich Toman, of On Karel Capek: A Michigan Slavic Symposium (Michigan Slavic Publications, 1992). His selection of the critical prose of Mikhail Aizenberg will be published in the spring of 1996 as a special number of Russian Studies in Literature; an article on Lyudmila Petrushevskaya and translations of several of her stories are forthcoming; a revised Russian edition of his Tsvetaeva book is to be published by the Tsvetaeva museum in Moscow. He is currently working on a study of Nikolai Kliuev.
