Snejana Tempest teaches Russian language, methodology of second language acquisition, and Russian folklore. Her duties include coordination of the Russian language program. Her scholarship focuses on two distinct, though interconnected areas: teaching methodology and Slavic folklore. She is working on an annotated anthology of Russian folklore. Her interest in folklore dates back to her dissertation on "Water: Folk Belief, Ritual and East Slavic Wondertale". Since then her research has centered on rituals and customs in nineteenth-century peasant everyday life. Her research in teaching methodology has focused primarily on incorporating the transmission of cultural literacy in a language curriculum and on testing strategies appropriate to a new content-oriented language classroom. She has also specialized in developing instructional software.
She has written several articles and presented papers on distinct areas of cultural literacy of particular importance to American students of Russian.
