Willie Campbell MA1939
was featured in "Alumni Profiles" in this year's Rackham Alumni Magazine. She has been active in social issues throughout her life. In the early 1940s, she joined the Unitarian Church, the American Civil Liberties Union, and the League of Women Voters, eventually becoming a member of its National Board. She is currently a member of the board of the African Development Foundation, focusing on empowering grassroots economic organizations. She says, "Doing graduate work in Sociology was probably the best preparation for living to the end of the century." writes that in 1987, after 17 years of operation, she closed down her independent study abroad program, Study in Greece, when the State Department issued an advisory against traveling to Greece. worked for the United State Public Health Service in Washington for
several years, doing research on the nursing and dental hygienest
professions.
After moving to California, I worked at Monterey Peninsula College in the
Affirmative Action Office, keeping statistics and being involved in hiring
practices.
For most of my career, I taught English as a Second Language in the
Monterey public schools. While a teacher, I had students from 32
countries, speaking many languages. Although retired from teaching, I am
still involved in testing bi-lingual students and keeping records and
statistics in an elementary school.
I feel that all of my jobs have involved my love of sociology and

left Ann Arbor in 1966 and joined the Peace Corps. He received his Ph.D. in Sociology at Brandeis University and has been teaching at the University of Massachusetts at Lowell since 1970. He has had Fulbright Grants to the USSR and the Republic of Armenia, and currently is directing the Cambridge, Mass., office of the Zoryan Institute for Contemporary Armenian Research and Documentation. writes: I have recently retired after 35 years of providing technical assistance to developing countries throughout the world in survey research techniques, with a special emphasis on demographic surveys. I worked with a number of organizations, including the UM, the Population Council, the World Fertility Survey, USAID, and various divisions of the United Nations. For me, my wife and our two children, the life was interesting and rewarding: seven years of residence in the U.S. and 28 in Peru, Bolivia, Chile, England, Papua New Guinea, and Mongolia. was a Fellow in the Program in Law and Social Sciences at Northwestern University, where he earned an M.A. in Sociology in 1972 and a J.D. in 1974. He later went on to practice law and serve on the Evanston, Illinois, city council. reports that for the last 24 years, he has been a faculty member at the Harvard School of Public Health, with interests in interventions and the policy study of how social context impacts health, particularly among children and youth. His most recent focus is on the obesity epidemic in the U.S. (and the rest of the industrialized world). is the Director of the Division of Policy Evaluation in the Social Security Administration's (SSA) Office of Research, Evaluation and Statistics. The Division evaluates the impact of alternative Social Security policies and demonstrations to return the disabled to work, and is the primary source in the SSA for retirement research funding, through the Retirement Research Consortium at Boston College and the University of Michigan. John Farley is chair of the Department of Sociology and Criminal Justice Studies at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. He served as president of the Midwest Sociological Society in 2000-01. His book, Majority-Minority Relations, was recently published in its fifth edition by Prentice Hall. He continues to study racial housing segregation, and has articles on that subject forthcoming in the Sociological Quarterly and in Contexts in early 2005. John held an appointment as assistant professor of sociology at the University of Arizona, acquired further training in statistics, and then worked in an actuarial department of an insurance company and for the Federal government as a statistician, since 1986 for the Economic Research Service of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, where his area is personal income distribution. has been appointed Minister of Health in the cabinet of Mexican President Vincente Fox. Trained as a medical doctor in Mexico, he came to Ann Arbor to earn a Ph.D. in both sociology and public health. Soon after he returned to Mexico he became the founding director of the National Institutes of Public Health, a combined research and policy institute for the Mexican government. Since getting my Ph.D. in Sociology and Architecture, I have held two major positions, both of which incorporated my core interests in behavior and environmental design. Between 1980 and 1986, I directed a project at the U of M Medical Center that combined research and advocacy in order to influence the hospital design process to accommodate the social and behavioral needs of patients and visitors. This project produced the first empirically-based body of information on this topic and had a significant impact on the design of the Medical Center. Since 1986, I've been a partner in Carpman Grant Associates, Wayfinding Consultants, an Ann Arbor-based consulting firm that makes it easier for people to find their way around complex sites and facilities. We are known for involving users in our work and are proud to have included over 7,500 to date. Over the course of my career, I've worked on hundreds of wayfinding projects, conducted more than 100 research studies, published many articles, and spoken at conferences and meetings around the country and abroad. The work my partner, Myron Grant, and I have done has won several awards and been covered in various magazines. Our book "Design that Cares: Planning Health Facilities for Patients and Visitors," 2nd edition, is published by Jossey Bass. We're finishing up the manuscript for a new book, which will help "directionally challenged" people and others learn wayfinding skills.

University, I began my career in the private sector as a sociologist and
analyst at Citibank. I then transferred to its private banking department
as a strategic planner for the business. I currently head the marketing
and Client Relationship Management department for the private banking and
wealth management operations in the Americas (North, Central And South
America)at HSBC. My undergraduate training at Michigan clearly laid a

2/13/06 - I completed a two-year Post-Doc Fellowship in the Demography of Aging at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, taught Demography at the University of Maryland, College Park, and completed a three-year grant I received from the National Institute on Aging to study stress and health among older adults. As a Gerontologist I continue to address Maryland legislators on such aging issues as long-term care and health disparities among older adults. I live near Baltimore and Washington, DC in Anne Arundel County.

Dr. Patrick Ball is a leading innovator in applying scientific measurement to human rights. He directs the Human Rights Data Analysis Group (HRDAG) at Benetech, a nonprofit organization that combines the impact of technological solutions with the social entrepreneurship business model to help disadvantaged communities. He served as the catalyst behind two open source software tools for the human rights community, "Martus" and "Analyzer," which aid in the secure storage and analysis of data on human rights violations.
