Jessica Adelmann BA1997 MSW2002 has been working as a case manager at a Detroit-area child placement agency. She is now pursuing an M.S.W. from the U of M, and hopes to work as a school social worker. Rebecca Akst BA1997 has taken a position at the St. Vincent and Sarah Fisher Center in Farmington Hills, Michigan, where she will work as an assistant manager of a program for teenage mothers. Howard Aldrich PhD1969 has published a new book, Organizations Evolving, from SAGE Publications. It uses evolutionary theory to explain the emergence of organizations, populations of organizations, and organizational communities. John Angle Ph.D1977 John taught at the University of Arizona and served as a statistician with the Economic Research Service (ERS/USDA) for many years. He twice received the Federal Forecasters Conference award for best paper. He served from 2003 through 2007 on the interdepartmental Confidentiality and Data Access Committee, advisory to the Office of Management and Budget. He began the drive to organize the American Sociological Association's Mathematical Sociology Section in the mid-1990's. After retiring from Federal service he founded the Inequality Process Institute. In the early 1980's he discovered the Inequality Process (IP), a particle system model with wide relevance to social stratification phenomena. The IP accounts with quantitative precision for, inter alia, the distribution of wage income conditioned on education and the dynamics of this distribution. A recent IP paper appeared in Physica A: Statistical Mechanics and Its Applications. From the point of view of interdisciplinary physics, sociology and economics are extensions of statistical mechanics. There is a bibliography of IP papers at http://www.inequalityprocess.org. Patrick Ball Ph.D1998 Dr. Patrick Ball is a leading innovator in applying scientific measurement to human rights. He directs the Human Rights Data Analysis Group (HRDAG) at Benetech, a nonprofit organization that combines the impact of technological solutions with the social entrepreneurship business model to help disadvantaged communities. He served as the catalyst behind two open source software tools for the human rights community, "Martus" and "Analyzer," which aid in the secure storage and analysis of data on human rights violations.

Juan Battle PhD1994 holds a joint position as Associate Professor of Sociology at both Hunter College and the Graduate Center of the City University of New York. Whitney Begeman BA1997 spent the years after her graduation working in the Indianapolis middle schools, first as an AmeriCorps volunteer, creating a service-learning program, then as an Adolescent Health Educator. She is currently pursuing her M.A. in Executive Development for Public Service at Ball State University. I graduated from Ball State University in 2000 with a Master of Arts in Executive Development for Public Service. I currently direct the America Reads Tutoring Corps at The University of Michigan (Edward Ginsberg Center for Community Service and Learning). It's great to be back at the UofM.

Daniella Biletski BA1990 is a manager at Boeing (formerly McDonnell Douglas) in Huntington Beach, California, where she has been working for over nine years. She has also obtained an M.B.A. from California State Polytechnic University at Pomona, and currently holds the position of Secretary /Treasurer for the U of M Club of Los Angeles. Georgina Binstock PhD2001 I am a researcher at the Center for Population Studies (CENEP) in Buenos Aires, Argentina John Boies Ph.D1991 I am currently a Mathematical Statistician in the Survey of Program Participation branch of the Demographic Statistical Methods Division of the US Census Bureau. I have been here since 1999.
I live in Alexandria, VA. Laurie Silver, a graduate of the School of Public Health at Micigan is my wife.

Ann Brand BA1992 is in the process of completing her Ph.D. in clinical psychology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She currently is working in the Section on Developmental Psychopathology at the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), on a study examining the role of emotion in the development of psychopathology in adolescence. She writes: I recently heard David Harris speak at a conference at NIH on his work examining racial identity. It was fascinating! Cynthia Buckley Ph.D1991 MA1988 is an Associate Professor of Sociology at the University of Texas at Austin and was recently appointed as a Centennial Fellow at the Center for Innovation, Creativity and Captial.
Sherri-Ann Butterfield PhD2001 is an Assistant Professor of Sociology at Rutgers University, Newark. Katharine Butterworth BA1953 writes that in 1987, after 17 years of operation, she closed down her independent study abroad program, Study in Greece, when the State Department issued an advisory against traveling to Greece. She then taught English to Greek university students, and in 1989 established and directed Beaver College's Greek program. She retired in 1995, and is now working at making herself into a writer. Willie Campbell MA1939 was featured in "Alumni Profiles" in this year's Rackham Alumni Magazine. She has been active in social issues throughout her life. In the early 1940s, she joined the Unitarian Church, the American Civil Liberties Union, and the League of Women Voters, eventually becoming a member of its National Board. She is currently a member of the board of the African Development Foundation, focusing on empowering grassroots economic organizations. She says, "Doing graduate work in Sociology was probably the best preparation for living to the end of the century." graduating from the University of Michigan with my bachelor degree, I
obtained my Master of Public Health at the University of Michigan. Since
obtaining my MPH, I have held three jobs in Public Health Informatics and
am currently a contractor with the CDC. Jeff Chin Ph.D1983 has been named a Pew Scholar for 1999-2000. Levon Chorbajian MA1965 left Ann Arbor in 1966 and joined the Peace Corps. He received his Ph.D. in Sociology at Brandeis University and has been teaching at the University of Massachusetts at Lowell since 1970. He has had Fulbright Grants to the USSR and the Republic of Armenia, and currently is directing the Cambridge, Mass., office of the Zoryan Institute for Contemporary Armenian Research and Documentation. His latest book is The Making of NagornoKarabagh: From Secession to Republic (Palgrave, 2001). Porsha Cills BA2005 In the fall, I'll be moving out to Chicago to work as an anaylst at Huron Consulting Group. Chiquita Collins PhD1996 was selected to participate in the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Scholars in Health Policy Research Program at the University of California at Berkeley for 1999-2001. Susan Davis-Ali Ph.D1992 After completing a post-doctoral fellowship at the University of Minnesota, I took a job as a psychometrician at a large testing company in Minneapolis, MN. I ended up loving the testing industry and stayed in it for 12 years. I was Vice President of Test Development for Thomson Prometric in 2005 when I decided to follow my passion for women's leadership issues and started my own coaching company called Leadhership1. These days I spend my time helping working women achieve success and sanity in their lives. I also published a book in March 2009 titled "How to Become Successful Without Becoming a Man." My PhD in social psychology was an amazing foundation for leading teams through the issues in the business world. I'll be at ASA this year. Hope to see some other Michigan grads there too!

Sandra Eyster Ph.D1999 2/22/06 Deputy Director of the Education Statistics Services Institute of the American Institutes for Research in Washington, D.C. John Farley Ph.D1977 John Farley is chair of the Department of Sociology and Criminal Justice Studies at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. He served as president of the Midwest Sociological Society in 2000-01. His book, Majority-Minority Relations, was recently published in its fifth edition by Prentice Hall. He continues to study racial housing segregation, and has articles on that subject forthcoming in the Sociological Quarterly and in Contexts in early 2005. He is looking forward to retirement in mid-2006. John Feather PhD1978 worked for fifteen years in geriatrics research at the medical school at SUNY Buffalo, and is now the Director of the AARP Andrus Foundation in Washington, D.C. John says, "My UM training has been enormously beneficial, even though I didn't end up in the place my professor expected." Mary Fox BA1967 PhD1978 is currently a Professor of Sociology at the School of History, Technology, and Society and Co-Director of the Center for Study of Women, Science and Technology at Georgia Institute of Technology. She received the 2000 Feminist Lecturer Award from Sociologists for Women in Society, and presently is studying programs for women in science and engineering. Michelle Fox BA1997 After college at UM, I went on to the University of Texas and received my Master's in Public Health. I then moved back to Michigan to work for the Michigan Department of Community Health as an HIV Epidemiologist for 3 years. I then moved with my husband, Carlos, to Irvine, California, where I currently work at the Orange County Health Department as a Health Promotion Epidemiologist. Julio Frenk PhD1983 has been appointed Minister of Health in the cabinet of Mexican President Vincente Fox. Trained as a medical doctor in Mexico, he came to Ann Arbor to earn a Ph.D. in both sociology and public health. Soon after he returned to Mexico he became the founding director of the National Institutes of Public Health, a combined research and policy institute for the Mexican government. Weining (William) Gao BA2004 Attending Columbia Law School Raul Garcia BA1996 writes: After graduating from UM, I attended the Harvard School of Education where I received my Ed.M. in Teaching and Curriculum. I have been working in the Boston Public Schools for five years as a high school teacher at the Boston Arts Academy and as the assistant principal of an alternative high school in Roxbury. I have settled into my newest job at the Boston Arts Academyas humanities teacher! This is where I'll be for a long time! Betsy Gard Thomas Gerschick PhD1994 has been promoted to Associate Professor with tenure at Illinois State University. Gloria Gibson Ph.D1995 2/13/06 - I completed a two-year Post-Doc Fellowship in the Demography of Aging at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, taught Demography at the University of Maryland, College Park, and completed a three-year grant I received from the National Institute on Aging to study stress and health among older adults. As a Gerontologist I continue to address Maryland legislators on such aging issues as long-term care and health disparities among older adults. I live near Baltimore and Washington, DC in Anne Arundel County.
Lisa Godek PhD1998 is living in the New York area, doing consumer market research for Pfizer. David Gola BA1999 writes: After spending some time in San Francisco, I recently moved back to Chicago and am currently trading derivatives for Bear Sterns. My sociology degree has paid off an infinite number of times, as 1 make use of sociological knowledge everyday while trading. Ruby Gooley Ph.D1989 Designing educational enrichment programs for students in Detroit Metro schools, and their families.(10/28/09) Steve Gortmaker BA1971 reports that for the last 24 years, he has been a faculty member at the Harvard School of Public Health, with interests in interventions and the policy study of how social context impacts health, particularly among children and youth. His most recent focus is on the obesity epidemic in the U.S. (and the rest of the industrialized world). He writes: "I returned to Ann Arbor for a reunion on July 4, 2000 with 30 other graduates of 1971, fulfilling a pledge we made back in that earlier era. It was a great time." Dana Greene Ph.D2000 I am an assistant professor in the Department of Sociology and Social Work at Appalachian State University in Boone, NC. Howard Hammerman PhD1974 writes: I have owned my own software consulting company since 1989. We are a leader in the business intelligence field providing training, consulting and software to government and industry throughout North America. Basically this means taking the analytical skills I learned at Michigan and applying them to real-world business problems. We are always looking for bright people with quantitative analytical skills to work for us on either a consulting or a permanent basis. Prior to 1989 I was an analyst at the Department of Housing and Urban Development in Washington, D.C., and prior to that I was an assistant professor in the Department of City Planning at Cornell University. Frances Hasso PhD1997 has accepted a position as an Assistant Professor at Oberlin College, starting in the fall. Colleen Heflin PhD2003 I am an Assistant Professor of Public Policy at the University of Kentucky. Virginia Hilbert BA1957 is the founder and C.E.O. of a computer company with a staff of seventy. She writes that a background in sociology can even extend understanding of "people" to those of us that go into business. Karen Honeycutt PhD1999 will take a position as Assistant Professor of Sociology at Keene State College in New Hampshire this fall. Howard Iams PhD1973 is the Director of the Division of Policy Evaluation in the Social Security Administration's (SSA) Office of Research, Evaluation and Statistics. The Division evaluates the impact of alternative Social Security policies and demonstrations to return the disabled to work, and is the primary source in the SSA for retirement research funding, through the Retirement Research Consortium at Boston College and the University of Michigan. Martha Ice PhD1985 writes from Seattle: At seventyfive, I'm retired now for a few years and living with the family of one of my sons. And was it "worth it" to do the Ph.D. at such a late age? You bet! My current life is a pleasant and satisfying mix of domesticity, community service, occasional scholarly presentations and reading.... reading.... reading.... Nadia Kim Ph.D2003 Nadia Kim is currently Assistant Professor of Sociology and Women's Studies at Brandeis University. She is working on a manuscript which examines U.S. immigrants'*pre-migrant* engagement of globalized 'race' ideologies and its impact on immigrants' sense of race/gender/class positioning in the US. Maria Kupillas PhD1993 graduated from the George Washington University Law School in 1996 and is now practicing law in Flushing, New York. University, I began my career in the private sector as a sociologist and
analyst at Citibank. I then transferred to its private banking department
as a strategic planner for the business. I currently head the marketing
and Client Relationship Management department for the private banking and
wealth management operations in the Americas (North, Central And South
America)at HSBC. My undergraduate training at Michigan clearly laid a
solid foundation for my career, and I am very grateful. Mary Kuszelewicz BA1983 MSW1985 is currently running a Yoga school catering to the University of Michigan community. She invites everyone to look her up for some stress release! Aubrey Laverty BA2008 I am an AmeriCorps*VISTA in Roseburg, OR. I'm the community educator on poverty at the United Community Action Network (UCAN). Right now, I am working on my summer activity program for children at our low-income housing sites. My job includes outreach & education, partnership building, volunteer recruitment, just to name a few. Later this fall, I will be helping organize our Homeless Count. I am enjoying living in the mountains and trying out west coast life. Albert Marckwardt Ph.D1968 writes: I have recently retired after 35 years of providing technical assistance to developing countries throughout the world in survey research techniques, with a special emphasis on demographic surveys. I worked with a number of organizations, including the UM, the Population Council, the World Fertility Survey, USAID, and various divisions of the United Nations. For me, my wife and our two children, the life was interesting and rewarding: seven years of residence in the U.S. and 28 in Peru, Bolivia, Chile, England, Papua New Guinea, and Mongolia. We plan to split our time in retirement between Lima, Peru, and Suttons Bay, Michigan. Leticia Marteleto PhD2001 is currently a Post-Doctoral Fellow at the Federal University of Minas Gerais in Brazil. Peter Meyers BA1969 was a Fellow in the Program in Law and Social Sciences at Northwestern University, where he earned an M.A. in Sociology in 1972 and a J.D. in 1974. He later went on to practice law and serve on the Evanston, Illinois, city council. He now works as an arbitrator, mediator, and fact-finder in labor and commercial matters, with offices in Chicago and the Philadelphia area. He is married and has two children. worked for the United State Public Health Service in Washington for
several years, doing research on the nursing and dental hygienest
professions.
After moving to California, I worked at Monterey Peninsula College in the
Affirmative Action Office, keeping statistics and being involved in hiring
practices.
For most of my career, I taught English as a Second Language in the
Monterey public schools. While a teacher, I had students from 32
countries, speaking many languages. Although retired from teaching, I am
still involved in testing bi-lingual students and keeping records and
statistics in an elementary school.
I feel that all of my jobs have involved my love of sociology and
anthropology in one way or another. Mary Noonan PhD2001 is an Assistant Professor of Sociology at the University of Iowa. Robert Penney PhD2002 has joined the faculty at George Washington University as an Assistant Professor of Sociology. Sara Peracca PhD2001 has a position as a Post-Doctoral Fellow at the Population Council in New York City. Mona Phillips Ph.D1982 has been named a Pew Scholar for 1999-2000. Jim Raymo PhD2000 is now in his second year as an Assistant Professor of Sociology at the University of Wisconsin at Madison. Karen Reardon PhD1983 earned a law degree from Vanderbilt University in 1986. While working with two successive Chicago-area law firms, she founded and incorporated Highlight, which provides scholarship assistance and tutoring for low income minority high school students. From 1986 to the present she has served on the board of directors of the Public Interest Law Initiative. In 1996 she founded the law firm Reardon Golinkin and Reed, concentrating its practice in insurance and employment law. Janet Reizenstein Carpman Ph.D1983 Since getting my Ph.D. in Sociology and Architecture, I have held two major positions, both of which incorporated my core interests in behavior and environmental design. Between 1980 and 1986, I directed a project at the U of M Medical Center that combined research and advocacy in order to influence the hospital design process to accommodate the social and behavioral needs of patients and visitors. This project produced the first empirically-based body of information on this topic and had a significant impact on the design of the Medical Center. Since 1986, I've been a partner in Carpman Grant Associates, Wayfinding Consultants, an Ann Arbor-based consulting firm that makes it easier for people to find their way around complex sites and facilities. We are known for involving users in our work and are proud to have included over 7,500 to date. Over the course of my career, I've worked on hundreds of wayfinding projects, conducted more than 100 research studies, published many articles, and spoken at conferences and meetings around the country and abroad. The work my partner, Myron Grant, and I have done has won several awards and been covered in various magazines. Our book "Design that Cares: Planning Health Facilities for Patients and Visitors," 2nd edition, is published by Jossey Bass. We're finishing up the manuscript for a new book, which will help "directionally challenged" people and others learn wayfinding skills.
Alain Samson MA2002 I am currently a Ph.D. student in Social Psychology at the London School of Economics and Political Science. I am also working as a research associate on a project about the effects of priming asylum seeker stereotypes on the thoughts and behaviors of the British.
Richik Sarkar MSW1994 I am currently an attorney in Cleveland, Ohio working for the law firm of Ulmer & Berne with a practice focusing on business litigation and public law. Recently, I was named an "Ohio Super Lawyer Rising Star" by Law & Politics and Cincinnati magazines-July 2005. (9/1/05)
Stephanie Schim MA1973 attended Nursing School at Cornell (B.S.N. '77), then Wayne State University for an M.S.N. ('81) and Ph.D. ('97) in Nursing. She writes that her professional nursing career has focused on community health (using that sociology background everyday!). She is now on the faculty at Wayne State University as an Assistant Professor of Nursing. Jonathan Sell MA1978 is now a lead systems analyst at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation, Department of Biostatistics and Epidemiology. Najia Sheikh BA2003 Currently residing in Westchester County, New York and working as a Paralegal in Corporate Immigration at Fragomen, Del Rey, Bernsen, & Loewy, P.C. in Manhattan. Johnnie Spraggins PhD1995 is an Associate Professor of Sociology at Randolph-Macon College, and recently has been teaching semester-long travel courses which take his students to Hawaii and Nagoya, Japan. Rebecca Utz Ph.D2004 I am an assistant professor of sociology at the University of Utah Margaret Weigers Vitullo Ph.D1994 is the Director of Academic and Professional Affairs at the American Sociological Association. Jon Voelkner PhD1989 MSW1990 worked as a clinical social worker for the Washtenaw County Community Mental Health department from 1991 to 1997, and since then has been a Washtenaw County Deputy Sheriff in Ann Arbor. He writes that his education at U-M proved to be the best preparation to work as a deputy sheriff. Geoffrey Ward PhD2001 was awarded a Mellon Foundation Post-Doctoral Fellowship at Columbia University. Kriesta Watson BA1994 Dr. Kriesta L. Watson’s background includes over fourteen years of administrative experience with ten years concentrated in the area of institutional research and assessment within both public and private higher educational institutions. Currently, she is the Assistant Professor of Education and Director of Institutional Research and Assessment at Shenandoah University spearheading the re-engineering of the registration, records, research, reporting, and assessment functions. To date, she has worked with the Accreditation Team in preparing the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) response for reaccreditation. Additionally, she has played a critical role in redefining the Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP) for the university by reshaping the learning objectives and outcomes. As the former Director of Assessment at Coppin State University (CSU), she strengthened institutional assessment practices. Some of her accomplishments included the development of an assessment process at CSU, re-engineering of the faculty course evaluation instrument, and playing a critical role in the preparation of Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE) Self-Study Report (with reaffirmation in academic year

Dr. Watson has presented at numerous conferences such as American Educational Research Association (AERA), the Council for the Study of Community Colleges (CSCC), North East Association for Institutional Research (NEAIR), and Association for Institutional Research (AIR).
Formerly, she was elected by Maryland Association for Institutional Research (MdAIR) as a Segmental Representative for Public Comprehensive Four-Year Colleges and Universities and selected as an American Evaluation Association (AEA) MSI Program Faculty Alumni.
Dr. Watson holds a Doctorate in Education from Morgan State University.
Additionally, she received her Master of Education from Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts and Bachelor of Arts from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. She was formerly a faculty member at Community College of Baltimore County and Director of Institutional Research and Assessment at Passaic County Community College and Southeastern University. She has also served as an adjunct faculty member at Montgomery College, Coppin State University, National-Louis University, Passaic County Community College, Bergen Community College, Teikyo Post University, and University of Maryland University College
Anne Woodell BA1958 was named Lake Merritt (Oakland), California, 1999 Citizen of the Year for her service to the community. In 1994 she was awarded the Robert M. Artz Award for Citizen Volunteer by the National Recreation and Park Association, and in 1998 she served as the Association's president.
