I am Charles Tilly Collegiate Professor of Sociology in the Department of Sociology and the Department of Germanic Language and Literatures at the University of Michigan. I am also a Corresponding Member of the Centre de Sociologie européenne, Paris.

Historical Sociology, Political Sociology, Sociology of Culture, Modern Colonialism, Modern Europe, Social Theory Co-Editor with Julia Adams of the series in Politics, History, and Culture (Duke University Press).
My work focuses on Germany and its former colonies (Namibia, Samoa, and Qingdao, China), on the sociology of German, French, and American sociology since the 19th century, on visual historical sociology, and on a modern city in the U.S. (Detroit). My documentary film Other Film Reviews |
