Fellowships & Grants

The Department of Sociology and the Rackham Graduate School offer the following opportunities in support of the academic initiatives of qualified candidates:

The Sociology Small Research Grant (formerly known as the Block Grant) is a departmental award intended to provide funding for expenses such as travel to conferences and workshops, as well as interviewing, transcription, photocopying and other research expenses. Applications are reviewed four times each year. The deadlines for the 2009-2010 academic year are: 10/15/09, 12/1/09, 2/1/10, 4/1/10. Click here for instructions and application.

The Sociology Dissertation Grant Application is intended to defray the research-related expenses of completing a dissertation. Applications are due twice a year, on October 15, 2009, and February 1, 2010. Click here for instructions and application.

The Rackham One Term Dissertation Fellowship is intended for use in the student’s final term, in which they will defend their dissertation. This award consists of candidacy tuition, registration fees, health care, and a stipend of $8,000 for one term. Applications are due to the Sociology Graduate Office twice a year, on November 2, 2009, and February 1, 2010. Individuals may receive the One Term Fellowship only once. Students should submit their application to the Sociology Graduate Office at least one full term before they hope to receive the fellowship.Click here for downloadable instructions and application.

The Rackham Predoctoral Fellowship is for students actively working on dissertation research and writing. This award provides three terms of support that may begin with spring/summer or fall term of 2010. Applications are due to the Sociology Graduate Office on December 1, 2009, for review by the Committee on Administration of Graduate Affairs (CAGA). CAGA may nominate up to five students for the award. Click on the Rackham Web site for instructions and application.

The Susan Lipschutz, Margaret Ayers Host and Anna Olcott Smith Awards are intended to aid women graduate students who have a cumulative GPA of 7.6 or higher and who have achieved candidacy by the application deadline. The Committee on Administration of Graduate Affairs (CAGA) reviews the applications and may nominate one student for the award. Applications are due to the Sociology Graduate Office on January 5, 2010. Click on the Rackham Web site for instructions and application.
