My research focuses on the relationship between the social services systems for intimate partner violence and alcohol and other drug use in the United States since the 1960s. These issues frequently co-occur in individuals but are rarely addressed together despite scholarly and financial support for doing so. I argue that this service gap and tensions stemming from attempts to bridge it result from differences in each field’s institutionalization as an area of intervention. Through analyzing differences between integrated and single-issue organizations in Midwestern metropolitan area, I show how history shapes both areas and allows some organizations to negotiate differences in intervention paradigms when most cannot. Aggregate level comparisons between all known organizations in either field (n=386) and comparative case studies of a subset of integrated and single-issue organizations (n=5) are used to identify predictors of and factors sustaining integration. Findings have implications for efforts to theorize change within and relationships between fields as well as conceptualizations of the human services and policy and practice related to both IPV and AOD.
