Elizabeth A. Armstrong is a cultural sociologist with interests in the areas of sexuality, gender, social movements, organizations, and higher education. I am interested in cultural stability and change, and the acquisition and deployment of culture. My work has focused on two cases: 1) The sources, development, and consequences of gay movements in the United States from the 1950s through the 1990s; and 2) How class and gender shape college experiences and outcomes, with a particular emphasis on the role of the university in the reproduction of inequality. It is my goal to extend cultural and institutional analysis to various empirical problems and sociological subfields.
