My primary research and teaching interests include: 1) social stratification (particularly social class difference/inequality), 2) political sociology, and 3) the intersection of biography and social structure. Recently I have focused attention on experiences of social class in the community, education and the wider society. I have published and continue to write personal essays about “growing up” working class and “ending up” in another world – academia. As faculty advisor to First Generation College Students@Michigan – a Sociology Department sponsored undergraduate organization – I work with students to raise awareness of those who are first in their families to attend college. In recent years I have contributed opinion essays to The Detroit News, Detroit Free Press and Ann Arbor News and am now a Contributor to AnnArbor.com where I write community–based and opinion essays.
