  • About

As an undergraduate I studied sociology, political science, and architecture.  These three disciplines have been influential for my current interest in urban sociology, issues of space/place, and how forms of inequality resonate through urban space.  I am interested in the use of visuals in sociological research and presentation, particularly photography and maps.  I am currently working on a research project with Professor Martin Murray in Urban Planning, looking at the rise of "private cities" in Africa with particular attention to the role of public/private partnerships between local/regional governments and private investors in envisioning, planning, and overseeing these cities.  As a Population Studies Trainee I work on the Michigan Prisoner Reentry project, studying the residential movement of Michigan parolees, and am particularly interested in examining homelessness among the reentry population.  I am beginning work on a research project studying the socio-spatial situation in Detroit, Michigan that lends itself to squatting as a response to housing insecurity, as well as seeking to understand the experiences of Detroit squatters.
