    Jane Rochmes is a Ph.D. candidate in Public Policy and Sociology and a trainee in Social Demography at the Population Studies Center. She received a BA in Sociology from Rice University in 2006. Jane’s research interests are race/ethnicity, education, and inequality. Specifically, she studies ways in which schooling perpetuates racial stratification in society and racial achievement disparities within schools. Her work primarily uses large-scale survey data and multi-level models to understand how school context relates to the experiences and outcomes of students. Jane’s dissertation focuses on teachers’ beliefs that family background and home environment are barriers to effectively teaching some students, examining the school context of teachers’ beliefs, their relationship to students’ educational outcomes, and the implications teachers’ beliefs have for race- and class-based achievement disparities. Other current work includes an analysis of the relationship between school-based health service provision and students’ academic performance, as well as a collaborative project testing the influence of for-profit colleges on degree receipt and labor market outcomes.
