REQUIREMENTS FOR SENDING AN ELECTRONIC DOCUMENT TO THE
DEPARTMENT
It has become increasingly time consuming and costly for our staff to process
electronic submissions from faculty or students using software programs that
we do not support or are outdated. Therefore we have developed the following
policy regarding the format of electronic submissions. We recommend the submitter
confirm that their documents meet these specifications to prevent delays due
to requests to resend a version meeting the criteria.
Word processor documents:
Documents that are produced using a word processing program are to be formatted
as readable using an US/English version of Microsoft Word no earlier than Version
8.x (commonly found in Office97 Suite of applications). The extension of .doc
is the default for this type of document. Many of the modern word processors
available will allow the user to ‘Save As’ the Microsoft .doc
file format. You may also save the documents as Microsoft .rtf
file which produces a Rich Text Format file. One caveat for using the .rtf format
is that if you have any advanced formatting included in your document there
is a good chance that this will be lost.
Spreadsheet based documents:
Documents that are produced using a spreadsheet program are to be formatted
as readable using an US/English version of Microsoft Excel no earlier than Version
8.x (Commonly found in Office97 Suite of applications). The extension of .xls
is the default for this type of document. Many of the modern spreadsheet applications
available will allow the user to ‘Save As’ the Microsoft .xls
file format.
Images:
The basic image format that is usable by the department is the Jpeg format.
It uses a file extension of .jpg and is readable using Internet Explorer 4.x
and above or Netscape 4.x and above.
PDF documents:
This is the recommended format for files that are to be read and not edited.
If you have access to the Adobe Acrobat application you are able to ‘Distill’
or create a .pdf file using any applications output.
Other documents:
If you have a document that falls outside of those described, it is recommended
that you contact the Sociology Department directly for instructions on how to
proceed. There is a list of contacts at the end of the next section.

REQUIREMENTS FOR USING DEPARTMENTAL LOANER EQUIPMENT
The Department of Sociology invites its faculty, staff and graduate students
to use our loaner equipment for academic based functions. To be eligible for
using this equipment the event must be officially sponsored or co-sponsored
by the Department and if you are a student you are required to have a faculty
member sign for the equipment. Students can request equipment to use for in-class
presentations. Students cannot borrow equipment for the purpose of doing homework.
To schedule the equipment for use go to the Equipment Request page
and fill in the form as instructed at that webpage.
Requests are on a first come first served basis and require at least one business
day to process. The requester will be required to sign a form 7479-91 "Request
for Removal and use of University Equipment" prior to receiving the item(s)
if they are physically leaving the Sociology Department. The user(s) who is
listed on the form 7479-91 will be responsible for picking up and dropping off
the equipment in the Sociology Computing Office. The user who signed the form
7479-91 will be responsible for the repairs if damage to the equipment occurs
while it is in their possession (signed out to them). If you are a student you
are required to have a faculty member sign for the equipment.
Most loans are assumed to be 48 hours or less and longer loan requests must
be submitted in writing to the Sociology Computing Office e-mail soc-help@umich.edu.
Please allow at least 2 business days for a response to such written requests.
If you are going to be late picking up your reserved equipment, please notify
the Sociology Computing Office e-mail soc-help@umich.edu
or call 734-647-5754. Otherwise the equipment may be used to fill other orders.
You may be asked for photo identification when borrowing equipment.
All items are to be returned on time to the Sociology Computing Office. If
you are going to be late returning your reserved equipment, please notify
the Sociology Computing Office e-mail soc-help@umich.edu
or call 734-647-5754. If equipment is not returned, legal action will be taken.

LSA Licensed Software Use
The College of LSA has a licensing coordinator that negotiates licensing of software used by the college.
Each software title is specific as to how the licensing is applied. To understand how a particular
license is defined, please go to the LSA Software License web site located at:
http://www.lsa.umich.edu/lsait/SWL
Some University of Michigan and LSA licensed software is permitted on personal machines, (non-LSA owned), computers. Users
(faculty and staff) who wish to have LSA licensed software that is allowed on personal machines,
(non-LSA owned), may do so by purchasing the MEDIA from the Showcase or by bringing the computer in to
the department for the staff to install. Sociology does not supply/loan media for installation on personal machines.
