Project Community
Project Community: Sociology 389
Project Community is a University coordinated experiential learning and community
service program—an ideal complement to your classroom instruction.
You can earn academic credit by reflecting sociologically on your volunteer
experience in the fields of education, criminal justice, health care and mental
health. Project coordinators work very closely with professional staff to facilitate
discussion of relevant academic issues and develop a classroom "community."
Weekly seminars are used as an interactive discussion forum as well as for problem
solving and as a support network for students.
You’re guided by trained undergraduate coordinators and graduate student
instructors, gaining useful skills and contacts while serving the needs of the
community.
COURSE REQUIREMENTS:
- Three to eight hours of weekly service in the community
- A weekly seminar
- Weekly journals pertaining to the community service and readings
- A final integrative paper (6-10 pages) or two shorter papers
