If you are a declared sociology major and the internship has not yet begun, you can apply by submitting via email to email@example.com, no later than three weeks prior to the start of the internship experience start date, the following materials:
1.Title the email Application for Internship Credit and attach a completed Application for Internship Credit. This form will require you to proved your name, UM ID#, uniqname, internship start and end dates, and the semester in which you wish to register for the credit. (If you complete an internship during the spring or summer, you may have the credit applied toward the fall term.)
2. One double-spaced document also attached to the above email that consists of: a) one page description of the internship experience; b) one page description of the intended sociological examination of the internship experience and environment; and c) a five to seven item bibliography of sociologically relevant literature that will serve as the basis for the extended examination of the internship experience in the paper due at the completion of the internship.
The Department's undergraduate program director evaluates all applications.You will be notified of the decision via email and receive an electronic permission to register for SOC 396 if your application is approved. Students must register for the course before the regular LSA Drop/Add period ends.
Occasionally, an internship organization will require that you produce a memo on U-M letterhead stating that you are eligible to receive academic credit for an internship. Sociology’s concentration advisor can create and sign this letter for students when needed. However, the University of Michigan will not enter hold harmless agreements with any organization at which a student is interning.
SOC 396 is counted toward the major as elective credit. Regular credit exclusions and limitations apply for sociology majors.
Students may elect to earn a second, but not a third, credit for SOC 396, provided that each internship is in a different setting.
