Where is my GSI’s office? What is my GSI’s phone number?
What are my GSI’s office hours? All of this information is posted
on the bulletin board near the Sociology Main Office on the third floor of the LSA Building at
500 S State Street.
Where is my instructor’s office? All information pertaining
to any Sociology instructor, whether they are faculty or GSI, is available on
the bulletin board near the Sociology Main Office on the third floor of the LSA Building at
500 S State Street.
How do I find out if a class counts towards a certain credit requirement?
Students should check with the concentration advisor, Elise Frankish, via email
at saraelis@umich.edu.
How do I get a grade changed? Students need to contact the
instructor for the course, and ask him/her to fill out a Supplemental Grade Report form, which is
available in the main office.
I'm a Sociology major and I'm looking for a job or to work for credit
with a Sociology professor. Do you know if there are any jobs? View
the Faculty by Research Interest section of our Web site, identify the faculty you find interesting and contact them directly.
What can I do if the class I want is closed? To get into a
closed class or closed section, go to the first class meeting of the course.
If it’s a discussion section or a lab, then the first meeting is after
the first lecture. Only instructors and GSIs can issue overrides.
What if I want to switch sections within a course? Go to the
first class meeting of the section you want to get into and see if the GSI will
issue an override.
How do I get an override?Students need to go to the first class meeting and obtain permission from the instructor. The instructor needs to contact the Sociology Department to notify the staff which students should receive overrides. Processing takes up to 48 hours, and an email is sent to students after processing stating that they need to add the class in Wolverine Access. Overrides are not processed without direct notification from a faculty member or GSI
The section I want to register for is closed. The section I’m
registered for conflicts with my other courses. What should I do? Students
need to go to the first class meeting for the section they want to get into.
Only GSIs can issue overrides for sections. Sections meet after the first lecture
has met. If students are able to obtain an override, they should follow the
procedures in the above question. Otherwise, they will need to change their
other courses to fit the section for which they are registered.
Where does my class meet? Students need to go to Wolverine
Access
and check for the room listed next to the class number. The sociology Student Services Office
assistant will notify sociology department staff of any last minute room changes.
In the past there have been courses without rooms the first
week of classes. If the course is ARR (arranged), students should contact the instructor
for the course by email.
I registered for the Safe House section of Soc 389. Do I go to the
Safe House on the first day of class? Students need to go to the room
listed in the Time Schedule for a specific section for the first class meeting.
If no room is listed, students need to call the Project Community Office for
information. The Project Community Office administers all aspects of Soc 389.Students with questions related to Soc 389 should contact the Project Community Office, 1024 Hill Street, 763-3548 or 647-8771.
I went to my class and no one was there. What should I do?
If sociology is not the home department, then students need to call the home
department (i.e., Psychology, CAAS, Political Science, etc.) for scheduling, instructor, and
room information. If sociology is the home department, and if the class is a
discussion section or lab (as opposed to the lecture), note that sections meet
after the first lecture. If it’s a lecture, then check Wolverine
Access
to ensure that you read the time and day information correctly and that a room
is assigned. If no room is listed, call the student services office at 647-6895.
If no information is available, students need to email the instructor for the
course and find out when/where the class meets, for example, ARRs.
Note:Psych 122/Soc 122 is a Psych course. Psych is the home department, and all
questions related to the schedule, classroom location, when the class meets,
reaching the instructor, etc., need to be directed to the Psych Department:
764-2580.
No specific class instructor is listed in the Time Schedule. How can
I contact the professor? Students should check Wolverine
Access
for the most current information regarding instructors. If the information for a particular
course is still not available, call the student services office at 647-6895.
I took such and such class last fall with Professor so and so and I am looking
for my final exam/paper, where can I find it? Instructors are responsible for
returning all papers and exams to students. Instructors should keep papers for a full
year following the end of the term to give sufficient time for the students to retrieve
them.
How can I schedule an appointment to declare my major in sociology?

How can I schedule an appointment to go over my sociology courses to

How do I sign up for an appointment for my senior audit? If
you are graduating in December, the audit needs to be done before the department
fall term drop/add deadline in case adjustments need
to be made. If you are graduating in April, the audit can wait until later in
the fall term, but should be done before registration starts for the winter

I think I did my senior audit last year, but I’m not sure, and
I’m graduating in December. Is there any way you can check? Call
LSA Advising in Angell Hall, 734-764-0332, and ask if you have completed your
audit. The LSA Advising Center maintains all academic student information and
records.
Helpful Hint:
Many students who arrive on campus for the first time in the fall do not
know that the most accurate place to look for course information is on Wolverine
Access.
