General

General Concentration Requirements

Students wishing to concentrate in sociology must complete one prerequisite plus a total of 30 credits at the 200-level and above, including a course in Methods (Soc 310), Theory (Soc 305), and Statistics (Soc 210 or Stats 350). Courses counting toward your concentration cannot be taken pass/fail: all courses must be taken for a grade.

THE PREREQUISITE

Students planning to concentrate in sociology must elect one of the introductory courses listed below. The prerequisite does not count toward the 30 credits needed to complete a concentration in sociology. Seniors must choose Sociology 202 (Contemporary Social Issues I) or Sociology 300 (Sociological Principles and Problems). Seniors are not allowed to register for 100-level courses.

  • 100 Principles of Sociology
  • 101 Person and Society
  • 102 Social Issues
  • 105 First Year Seminar
  • 195 Principles of Sociology (Honors)
  • 202 Contemporary Social Issues I
  • 300 Sociological Principles and Problems

Note: Soc 122 may not be counted as a prerequisite for the concentration.

THE REQUIRED COURSES

There are three required courses: Statistics, Methods and Theory. All three courses count toward the 30 sociology credit hours needed at the 200-level and above.

Sociology 210, Statistics 350, or an approved equivalent, with a grade of “C-” or better, can count toward the Statistics requirement. Students who have taken Statistics 100 cannot receive credit for Sociology 210 and therefore must take Statistics 350.

Sociology 310 (Research Methods), with a grade of “C-” or better, fulfills the Methods requirement.

Sociology 305 (Introduction to Social Theory) fulfills the Theory requirement. If Soc 305 is elected during fall or winter term, it also fulfills the upper-level writing requirement (ULWR). Soc 305 taught during spring or summer term does not count for the ULWR. Please remember to indicate ULWR preference during registration.

IMPORTANT: Students are required to take Soc 210/Stats 350 and Soc 310 prior to their senior year, the rationale being that the information taught in these courses will help your understanding of sociological readings, as well as enhance your writing skills. A students who declares late with only two or three terms before graduation, must take Soc 210 or Stats 350 and Soc 310 prior to their last term before graduation.

ELECTIVE COURSES

The remainder of the required 30 sociology credits can be fulfilled with any sociology course at the 200-level and above. Please keep in mind that only 8 credits combined of Soc 321 (Intergroup Dialogues), Soc 389* (Project Community) and Soc 395 (Independent Study) can be counted towards the sociology concentration.

*Only 4 credits of Soc 389 (Project Community) can be used toward the concentration and a sub-concentration.

TRANSFER CREDIT AND COURSES TAKEN OUTSIDE OF THE SOCIOLOGY DEPARTMENT

The Sociology Department requires that 15 of the 30 credits applied to a sociology concentration be earned in residence. In some instances, it is also possible to apply a course taken outside of the department toward your concentration. The most common instance of this is through a course cross-listed with sociology and another LSA department. On rare occasion, we are able to count a non-sociology course towards the concentration.

Please see the section on petitioning the sociology department for more information.
