How to Join

As a declared sociology major, you are already a part of the Undergraduate Sociology Association (USA). We host variety of activities for concentrators and potential concentrators, including course preview events, coffee times and lunches with professors, a grad school panels, and community service events. Elise Frankish, our advisor, sends out e-mails to all concentrators announcing upcoming events.

If you are not a declared major, e-mail USAEBpeople@umich.edu, and we can add you to the e-mail list. Also, if you have any ideas for events, let us know!

Elections for the 2007-08 school year will take place in February 2007. Positions available include: executive director, associate director, campus relations director/committee, and internal relations director/committee.

Here are the responsibilites and requirements for each position:

All Members
  • attend meetings and events
  • brainstorm ideas

    Executive Director
    (previous experience with USA preferred)
  • serve as main contact person with sociology faculty & staff
  • run meetings
  • oversee activities of other directors
  • maintain USA binder and computer files

    Associate Director
  • not graduating at end of year (will assume the position of Executive Director the following year)
  • respond to inquiries about our organization plan
  • assist executive director as needed

    Campus Relations Director(s)/Committee
  • research opportunities for USA to work with other campus groups (ex. Kids' Fair/K-grams, Goodness Day, Festifall/SORC, Winterfest/SORC, Detroit Project)
  • present ideas to other USA members at meetings
  • follow through with signing up, getting volunteers, etc
  • serve as contact with the director at Food Gatherers, coordinate volunteers, and attend every visit

    Internal Relations Director
  • research opportunities for concentrators within department (ex. fall and winter term course previews, grad school panel, job panel, coffee with professors)
  • present ideas to other USA members at meetings
  • follow through with contacting appropriate people, sign ups, volunteers, thank you cards, etc
  • plan regular fellowship events for the board and for fellow concentrators
  • take minutes at meetings
