Sociology Undergraduate Research Opportunities (SURO)

Sociology Undergraduate Research Opportunities (SURO) is a great avenue to learn more about an area of research that interests you in the early stages of your academic study.
SURO gives you the opportunity to work as a research assistant with a faculty member or graduate student on research already in progress. You’ll explore the research topic in depth and experience the social science research process first hand.

Click below to review currently available SURO positions.

  • Citizenship and a Sociology of Rights
  • Developmental Idealism Studies
  • How Has Sexuality Aged?: Content on Sexuality in Gerontological Research
  • Michigan Prisoner Reentry Project
  • This Job is Killing Me!: Working Conditions and Health in the United States
  • Violence: Tracing the Construction of a Social Problem in Print Media from 1980-2004
  • Topics and duties performed will vary, but each research project must have a learning component. As a sociology concentrator, you’ll receive academic credit for SURO by enrolling in Soc 395 (it must be taken for a grade). Credit amounts vary (1-4 credits), depending on the nature of the specific research project (the amount is determined by the faculty member and/or the graduate student).

    STUDENT GOALS

    • Learn how to create annotated bibliographies and to abstract journal articles.
    • Gain skills in working with various library databases relevant to the research topic.
    • Become familiar with data collection and analysis.
    • Learn how social science research is conducted.

    STUDENT GUIDELINES

Students need to meet with the faculty member or GSI to discuss the research topic, the goals for the project and the guidelines/expectations for the student’s work. Students must keep a record of time spent on tasks in addition to a journal of activities performed.

    PROCEDURE

Each semester, new listings for SURO both are sent out via email and posted on the bulletin board outside of the Student Services Offices on the third floor at 500 S State Street. Each listing will give instructions on how to apply to participate in that particular research project. Graduate students can work directly with undergraduates as long as a faculty member supervises the research project. Once the override is entered into the system, the student will be notified via email.

    GRADING AND CREDIT HOURS

Soc 395 must be elected for a grade if it is to be counted for the sociology concentration.

If students do not intend to use it towards their concentration program, they can elect it pass/fail. A student can use a combined total of 8 credit hours for Soc 321, Soc 389, and Soc 395. Credit hours awarded for SURO vary. The department requires 3 hours of work per week for each credit hour earned. In spring and summer half terms, the hours are doubled.
