Can I fulfill the concentration PREREQUISITE with transfer credit?

Yes, you can! The first step in determining if the introductory sociology course you are planning to take will meet the concentration's prerequisite is to determine if that class has been evaluated by the U-M Credit Evaluators. If it has, you’ll find it listed on the LSA Transfer Equivalencies web page with information about whether and how it transfers to U-M.

If the course you are planning to take is not listed on the LSA Transfer Equivalencies web page, you will need to have the course evaluated by the Credit Evaluators. Follow the instructions on the Office of Undergraduate Admission's Out-of-Residency Credit Evaluation web form to submit your course information for pre-evaluation.

If the out-of-residency evaluation results indicate that the class will transfer directly as SOC 100, 102, 105, 195, or 300, you do not need to do anything else to have the transfer course fulfill the concentration prerequisite. If the evaluation indicates that the course will transfer as "SOC departmental" credit, you will need to email a complete syllabus and course description to socadvisor@umich.edu. A Sociology faculty member (the undergraduate program director) will review the syllabus and make sure that the transfer class covers all the sociological concepts that an introductory sociology class at U-M would cover. If the faculty member determines that it does, then you can use the transfer course to fulfill the concentration prerequisite.

If you want to know for sure that the course will transfer as  the concentration prerequisite before you enroll and begin attending the class meetings, follow these procedures well in advance of the semester in which you wish to enroll (i.e. the semester prior). Some decisions may take up to 90 days.

Remember, a maximum of 15 transfer credits may be counted toward the concentration, subject to departmental approval. The College of LSA has more specific rules about the number of credit hours that may be transferred toward the bachelor’s degree. See the LSA Bulletin for details.

All approvals are tentative until the course(s) is complete; neither the University nor the Department of Sociology can grant credit until the institution from which you wish to transfer credit has issued an official transcript.
