I don’t know if a course I want to take will transfer.

I want to take a sociology course at another school, but I don’t know if it will transfer.

The first step in determining if the course you are planning to take will transfer to U-M is to determine if that class has been evaluated by the U-M Credit Evaluators. If it has, you’ll find it listed on the LSA Transfer Equivalencies web page with information about whether and how it transfers to U-M.

If the course you are planning to take is not listed on the LSA Transfer Equivalencies web page, it doesn't mean that it won't transfer, it means that the U-M has never evaluated that particular course before. You will need to have the course evaluated by the Credit Evaluators. Follow the instructions on the Office of Undergraduate Admission's Out-of-Residency Credit Evaluation web form to submit your course information for pre-evaluation.

If the course you took has already been evaluated by the U-M Credit Evaluators as a specific SOC course number (e.g. SOC 344) or as general SOC departmental credit (e.g. SOC 201X, or some similar variation) at the 200 level or above, you do not need to do anything; the course will automatically be counted as an elective concentration credit.

Occasionally, a course that sounds like it is a sociology courses is evaluated by the Credit Evaluators as "Interdepartmental Social Science" credit, or INTERSS. Click here for more information about how to find out if courses evaluated in this way can count toward a sociology concentration.

If you want to know for sure that the course will transfer before you enroll and begin attending the class meetings, follow these procedures well in advance of the semester in which you wish to enroll (i.e. the semester prior). Some decisions may take up to 90 days.

Remember, a maximum of 15 transfer credits may be counted toward the concentration, subject to departmental approval. The College of LSA has more specific rules about the number of credit hours that may be transferred toward the bachelor’s degree. See the LSA Bulletin for details.

All approvals are tentative until the course(s) is complete; neither the University nor the Department of Sociology can grant credit until the institution from which you wish to transfer credit has issued an official transcript.
