First-Year Seminars are intended to:
- Enable first-year students and faculty to interact in a small class experience
(maximum enrollment of 20 students - Introduce students to the demands of intellectual inquiry
- Engage students as participants in the university's intellectual community
- Develop students' communication skills
- Help students to discover the value of specialized academic knowledge
The First-Year Seminar Program offers entering students a small group learning experience. Students participate in groups of approximately 18-20 and explore subjects of particular interest in collaboration with a faculty member in a seminar setting. Hopefully these seminars will introduce students to the university as an intellectual and social community and make it easier for them to make the transition from high school.
Only first-year students (including first-year students with sophomore standing) may pre-register for First-Year Seminars. All other students need permission of instructor. As an exception, first- and second-year students may enroll in 200-level seminars offered by language departments.
