Responsibilities: Interns work at either a local organization that supports different communities in traditional textile production through training and marketing services, or at a cultural center featuring local art, music and theater. There may also be opportunities to work on projects with rural farmers. Interns assist local staff in the creation of marketing materials and on administrative work, for example client service and conducting research.

Requirements to participate:

  • At least an intermediate level of Spanish.
  • The flexibility to participate in many different tasks depending on the ever-changing needs of the organization.
  • The creativity and initiative to work in an environment with limited resources.
  • The cultural sensitivity to engage visitors and clients in a professional manner.
  • Education and/or professional experience in a relevant field like business, marketing or public relations.

Caregiving, Peru

Caregiving

Name of Position: Caregiving, Peru

Pay: This position is unpaid.
Responsibilities: The caregiving projects support local initiatives targeted at providing disadvantaged children and senior citizens emotional and social support. Interns bring enthusiasm and foster positive attitudes and behaviors. They help build self-esteem by sharing their skills and energy. Interns live in Cusco and work in centers throughout the area. 

Interns should have a very caring and open attitude. Spanish is not required for most positions, although at least a basic level is helpful. Education and/or professional experience in a caregiving-related field is not required. 

Positions include: assisting at a geriatric center, caring for orphans, assisting at an after-school center, caring for malnourished children, caring for children with disabilities, assisting at a shelter for abused girls (Spanish required).

Responsibilities: Interns work with teachers to help create more interactive and student-centered learning environments. They bring enthusiasm to class activities and engage the children to help them learn and stay motivated. The interns also communicate with them in a way that broadens the children's views about different people and places. 

A basic level of Spanish is required for most positions.

Positions include: Kindergarten teaching (basic Spanish required), Elementary school teaching (intermediate Spanish required), Teaching French and French culture (intermediate French required).

Health, Peru

Responsibilities: Poverty in Cusco has significant implications on the physical and mental health of the local population. Many diseases, injuries and maternal health problems are directly related to poor living and working conditions, and health issues like those stemming from alcohol abuse, inadequate public sanitation and limited personal hygiene are a persistent challenge. 

The projects focus on a health post and a center for mental health patients from underprivileged backgrounds. Interns work in medical assistance projects serving disadvantaged communities in Cusco. Interns collaborate with the local staff to provide quality healthcare. They also share public health information with patients to empower them to become more proactive in managing their own health.

Sports, Peru

Responsibilities: Interns work at a center offering sports training and facilities to children ages 8-17 from underprivileged backgrounds. The center focuses on the following sports: athletics, basketball, boxing, gymnastics, martial arts, soccer, table tennis and weightlifting. For approximately four hours a day, interns assist local staff in training and coaching groups of children in a specific sport of their choice. They also help organize tournaments for the children from the different schools who are invited to take part in the activities of the center.

Requirements to participate:

  • The health and physical capability to play sports on a daily basis.
  • At least a basic level of Spanish.
  • The creativity an initiative to work in an environment with limited resources.
  • Education and/or professional experience in a sports-relevant field is not required.

NGO Support, Peru

Pay: This position is unpaid.
Responsibilities: The community in Lima UBELONG supports faces numerous urban poverty challenges. However, most of those challenges have not been researched and documented. Consequently, most interventions in the area are designed without the data and evidence necessary to meet their goals. Interns play an important role in conducting needs assessment studies and driving the sort of targeted program design that leads to effective action. Additionally, by forging new productive relationships with the community, interns contribute to building trust between our local partner and the community. Trust underpins the constructive dialogue that leads to collaborative grassroots solutions. Interns live and work in a community outside of downtown Lima.

Physical Education, Peru

Physical education

Name of Position: Physical Education, Peru

Pay: This position is unpaid.
Responsibilities: Intens lead physical education sessions for children ages 7 and up. Typical activities include playing soccer and volleyball, as well as general fitness ones like jogging, stretching and yoga. Interns are encouraged to introduce new ideas and are depended upon to organize, motivate and supervise the children. The project also has a strong healthy living component that interns stress through group discussions on issues like exercise, nutrition and sportsmanship.

Requirements to participate:

  • The health and physical capability to by physically active on a daily basis.
  • The creativity and initiative to lead activities with limited resources.
  • Education and/or professional experience in a sports-relevant field is not required.
  • Teaching experience and/or certifications are not required.
