Scholarship Requirements

  • All scholarships through the LSA Scholarship Office are only available to students who will obtain a degree in the College of LSA. 
  • Only students who are U.S. Citizens or Permanent Residents ("green card holders") are eligible for merit or need-based scholarships through this scholarship program. 
  • Students who receive a scholarship from the College of LSA will write a letter of appreciation each year to the donor(s) of the scholarship they are receiving. For sample letters, please click here.
  • Each student who is the recipient of a four-year LSA scholarship is required to complete at least 40 hours of volunteer service over the course of the academic year (fall, winter, spring, and/or summer terms). For more information about the Scholarship Service Program, please click here.
  • Scholarship students will renew their FASFA each year if applicable.
  • Students must notify the LSA Scholarship Office of any funds or support they receive form sources other than the University of Michigan and the College of LSA. Please contact Doug Fletcher via email at douglasf@umich.edu
  • Recipients of a four-year scholarship from the College of LSA are required to maintain a 3.0 GPA throughout their time at the University of Michigan. If your GPA should fall below 3.0, please call the LSA Scholarship Office at 763-9521 to set up an appointment with the LSA Scholarship Manager, Doug Fletcher, to discuss your situation or you may email him directly at douglasf@umich.edu.  There is no GPA requirement for the LSA Current Student Scholarship.
  • If  a student's GPA falls below the 3.0 requirement for one academic year (Fall/Winter terms), they will be contacted by the Scholarship Office and placed on probation. Students on probation are required to send a monthly status update to Doug Fletcher (douglasf@umich.edu) once the term begins. Academic status will be reviewed at the end of the academic year in May at which time a decision will be made on the continuation of the scholarship for the following academic year. 
  • Students will maintain full-time enrollment of 12 credit hours or more per term. If a student chooses to withdraw or ceases to carry the required number of credits per semester, they should contact Doug Fletcher (douglasf@umich.edu) prior to the beginning of the semester.
  • If a student transfers to another college or school within the University of Michigan, or if they transfer to a new university, they must contact the scholarship office prior to the beginning of the academic term the transfer will be in effect. Please email Doug Fletcher at douglasf@umich.edu
