The Sweetland Center for Writing supplements formal writing instruction by providing free programs that help students understand assignments, develop ideas, support arguments and claims, integrate new media, cite sources, and revise at the paragraph and sentence level. One-on-One Writing Tutorials

Writing Workshop +

Sweetland Writing Workshop faculty are University of Michigan writing instructors who meet with students one-on-one to discuss their writing for UM courses and programs.

Peer Tutoring +

Peer Tutors are upper-level undergraduates who have received extensive training to work one-on-one with other students on their writing. Undergraduates can visit the Peer Tutoring Centers on a walk-in basis during their hours of operation.

Online Writing Lab (OWL) +

Undergraduates can submit writing online to the Online Writing Lab (OWL) and receive written comments and suggestions from trained Peer Tutors within 72 hours.

Sweetland also runs a synchronous online tutorial service (SyncOWL) that allows students to connect with tutors live to receive feedback on their writing.


 

Graduate Student Seminars and Workshops

Dissertation Writing Institute +

The Dissertation Writing Institute offers work time and space to graduate students writing their dissertations, as well as a stipend, group workshops with other dissertators, and individual feedback from the Institute leaders.

Sweetland Fellows Seminar +

The Sweetland Center for Writing Fellows Seminar brings together graduate student instructors (Junior Fellows) and faculty (Senior Fellows) who share a commitment to integrating writing into their courses.

Sweetland-Rackham Workshops on Writing Series +

In collaboration with Rackham, the Sweetland Center for Writing offers focused workshops on a variety of issues related to graduate-level writing.

Sweetland Writing Groups +

The Sweetland Center for Writing hosts the Graduate Student Writing Groups, where graduate students meet to workshop their writing. Read more.
