Administrators, staff, and Graduate Student Research Assistants all play a role in Sweetland's Research Team
The Sweetland Center for Writing is an active participant and leader in Composition and Rhetoric Studies. With research as one of the unit’s primary goals, Sweetland’s faculty investigate a variety of topics, including: writing in the disciplines/writing across the curriculum; new media writing; Generation 1.5 writing experiences; writing in the sciences; and first-year writing. This diversity of research reflects the diverse academic interests of Sweetland’s faculty. The research conducted at Sweetland has been published in journals such as Assessing Writing and Praxis; it has also led to several institutional changes, most recently the implementation of a new Directed Self-Placement process. In addition, Sweetland’s faculty members have presented their research at conferences such as Computers and Writing, the Conference on College Composition and Communication, and the Modern Language Association.
In addition to the active research of Sweetland's faculty members, the department also benefits from the research work of Graduate Student Research Assistants (GSRAs). As part of the Sweetland Research Team, these GSRAs research ways to enhance the courses and services offered by Sweetland, while at the same time developing projects that advance contemporary conversations in the field of composition. Under the direction of Sweetland Director Anne Ruggles Gere, the GSRAs present and publish their research in a variety of forums.
