The Sweetland Center for Writing provides formal writing instruction and free programs that help students understand assignments, develop ideas, support arguments and claims, integrate new media, cite sources, and revise at the paragraph and sentence level.
Incoming students looking for information on choosing your first UM writing courses should start at the First-Year Writing Requirement page. Transfer students can find out more about writing courses taken elsewhere that may satisfy the First-Year Writing Requirement.
In Person Writing Support
Sweetland offers two options for in-person writing support for undergraduate students: Peer Tutoring and Writing Workshop. Peer Tutors are upper-level undergraduates who have received extensive training to work one-on-one with other students on their writing. Undergraduates can visit the Peer Tutoring Centers on a walk-in basis during their hours of operation. Writing Workshop faculty are University of Michigan writing instructors who meet with students one-on-one to discuss their writing for UM courses and programs. Learn more...
Web Based Writing Support
An alternative to in-person writing assistance, undergraduates can use SyncOWL to connect live via webcam to a Sweetland Peer Tutor using Google+ Hangouts. Undergraduates with more lead time can submit writing via email to the OWL (Online Writing Lab) and receive written comments and suggestions from trained Peer Tutors within 72 hours. Learn more...
