Significant Opportunities in Atmospheric Research & Science (SOARS) SOARS, Significant Opportunities in Atmospheric Research in Science, is a graduate to undergraduate bridge program designed to broaden participation in the atmospheric and related sciences. The program is equal parts research internship, learning community, and mentoring program. SOARS offers comprehensive financial support for summer research and graduate school for up to four years. SOARS invites students from many disciplines, including chemistry, physics, engineering, mathematics, ecology, and the social sciences, to apply their expertise to understanding the Earth's atmosphere. In particular, SOARS seeks to involve more students from groups that are historically under-represented in the sciences, including Black or African-American, American Indian or Alaska Native, Hispanic or Latino, female, and first-generation college students.
American Geophysical Union (AGU) For over three quarters of a century, AGU has supplied an organizational framework within which geophysicists have created the programs and products needed to advance their science. From its beginnings as the representative of American geophysicists in the international scientific community, AGU has evolved beyond parochial boundaries of nation and discipline into an active community of over 41,000 scientists from 130 countries. AGU now stands as a leader in the increasingly interdisciplinary global endeavor that encompasses the Earth and space sciences. AGU, a nonprofit scientific organization, was established in 1919 by the National Research Council and for more than 50 years operated as an unincorporated affiliate of the National Academy of Sciences.
Project 1000 Project 1000 is a national program created to assist underrepresented students applying to graduate school. Ecological Society of America (ESA) The Ecological Society of America (ESA) is a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization of scientists founded in 1915 to promote ecological science by improving communication among ecologists; raise the public's level of awareness of the importance of ecological science; increase the resources available for the conduct of ecological science; and ensure the appropriate use of ecological science in environmental decision making by enhancing communication between the ecological community and policy-makers.
Alliances for Graduate Education in the Professoriate (AGEP) In late October 1998, the NSF Alliances for Graduate Education and the Professoriate (AGEP) program awarded eight universities nearly $2.5 million each to significantly increase the number of African American, Hispanic and Native American students receiving science, mathematics and engineering (SME) degrees. These alliances are comprised of a network of universities, which may be either statewide or regional. One institution serves as the lead institution, and all work cooperatively to increase the number of underrepresented minority Ph.D. graduates in SME.
American Indian Science & Engineering Society (AISES) The AISES mission is to substantially increase the representation of American Indian and Alaskan Natives in engineering, science and other related technology disciplines.
Association of American Universities (AAU) The Association of American Universities (AAU) is an organization of research universities devoted to maintaining a strong system of academic research and education. It consists of sixty U.S. universities and two Canadian universities. AAU was founded in 1900 by a group of fourteen Ph.D.-granting universities in the U.S. to strengthen and standardize U.S. doctoral programs.
