UMBS-TNC Fellowships

The University of Michigan Biological Station (UMBS) is pleased to announce the availability of fellowships in support of student research projects. These fellowships are a component of a partnership between the UMBS (www.lsa.umich.edu/umbs) and The Nature Conservancy of Michigan (TNC, see www.nature.org/michigan). Students may request funds in support of research projects focused on a topic or topics of interest to the UMBS and TNC, to include:

  • Invasive Species and Biodiversity
  • Freshwater Ecosystem Integrity
  • Climate Change Effects on Ecosystems
Ongoing activities related to these topics are described on line at http://nature.org/initiatives/ (TNC) and http://www.lsa.umich.edu/umbs/edu/research (UMBS). Research addressing (1) invasive species (e.g. purple loosestrife, baby's breath, zebra muscles, rusty crayfish, others) and their effects on northern Michigan ecosystems and landscapes, (2) carbon accumulation in ecosystems, and (3) surface water quality is of particular interest, but any project addressing one our more of the three topics listed above will be considered.

Eligibility: Undergraduate and graduate students enrolled at any accredited college or university are eligible to apply. Applications will be accepted from students with wide ranges of experience and expertise. Eligible categories of students include, but are not restricted to-

  • Undergraduates seeking funds in support of small, independent research projects. (Students need not be currently enrolled, but should enroll for the summer session if awarded a fellowship.)
  • Beginning graduate students seeking funds for exploratory research that could lead to a more mature thesis or dissertation research plan.
  • Advanced graduate students seeking to augment ongoing research projects.
Mentors: Applicants must identify a faculty mentor who will be in residence at UMBS for part or all of the summer. Exceptions to the requirement that the mentor be in residence at UMBS will be considered for advanced graduate students.

Review Process: The UMBS administration, in consultation with resident faculty and researchers, will consider all applications in support of student research as related to themes described in this announcement. Review criteria include-

  • Relevance of proposed activities to TNC-UMBS topics of interest (above);
  • Intellectual merit of the ideas expressed in the project summary;
  • Feasibility of the research plan;
  • Appropriateness of the budget for the research; and
  • The level of interest and commitment of both the student and mentor.
Residency and Fees: Successful applicants are encouraged to reside and base their research at the UMBS during the summer. Facilities are also available for projects running through fall, winter and spring. Information about UMBS residential and research facilities, and related fees is available at http://www.lsa.umich.edu/umbs.
