The University of Michigan Biological Station offers the
Chase S. and Stella Osborn Fellowship
for research in the natural sciences that is based at the Chase S. Osborn Preserve.
Award: Up to $3,000 will be awarded each year to one or more recipients. In addition, research fees will be covered.
Eligibility: Students enrolled in a graduate degree program in the natural sciences will be considered. Research must be based at the Chase S. Osborn Preserve on Sugar Island near Sault Sainte Marie, Michigan.
Basis of Selection: Selection will be based upon a research plan, letters of recommendation, merit and need.
Term of Fellowship: Up to a one year period beginning after April 1st each year. Recipients may apply for renewal. Awards will be made to a recipient for a maximum of three years.
Housing: Limited housing is available on the Osborn Preserve for a nominal charge. Housing priority will be given to award recipients.
Description of Preserve: The Chase S. Osborn Preserve is a secluded 3,200 acre tract in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. It is located about 15 miles from Sault Sainte Marie, Michigan, on the southern end of Sugar Island, a 18,000 acre island in the St. Mary's river between Lake Superior and Lake Huron. On the preserve and nearby there are a variety of flora and fauna associated with extensive hardwoods and coniferous forests, wetlands (bogs, marshes, swamps and fens), old fields, meadows and the very large St. Mary's river system with numerous islands, bogs, sloughs and lake-like wide channels.
Publications: Award recipients will submit three copies of a research summary upon completion of their research no later than March 31st. Additionally, any publications resulting from work at the Osborn Preserve should contain appropriate acknowledgments of the funding and location of the work. Three copies of resulting publication will be forwarded to the University of Michigan Biological Station for reference and archiving.
