Community Living Standards

The University of Michigan Biological Station (UMBS) is an integral part of the University of Michigan academic community. We are committed to providing an environment conducive to the educational, psychological, and social development of UMBS residents. We attempt to create and nurture this environment by encouraging respect for the rights of the individual balanced by the rights and interests of the community as a whole. We expect that all members of the UMBS community – residents, staff, and visitors – act in a manner that demonstrates respect and consideration for those around them. The Community Living Standards described in the attached pages have been developed to help promote such behavior and ensure an environment of civility for everyone.

All students at UMBS and the University of Michigan are required to adhere to the Statement of Student Rights and Responsibilities (hereafter called the “Statement”), which outlines specific behaviors that contradict the values of the entire University community. Consequently, these behaviors are prohibited. In addition, all residents and their guests are expected to be familiar with and abide by the Community Living Standards (CLS).

The University of Michigan and UMBS believe very strongly that each member of the University Community must take ownership of the Statement of Student Rights and Responsibilities/Community Living Standards. Supporting and defending these standards means that students must accept them and act in good faith to see that all members of the community subscribe to them.

It is important to understand that a violation of the Statement is also a violation of the CLS.Residents choose to behave in ways that may violate the Statement and the CLS will be subject to losing their opportunity to live at UMBS.
