Graduate Fellowships in Biosphere-Atmosphere Interaction Research

BART (Biosphere-Atmosphere Research & Training) is a National Science Foundation-funded PhD training program (IGERT-NSF) developed to provide doctoral students with enhanced interdisciplinary training in the skills required for conducting research in biological and atmospheric sciences. BART training is centered at the University of Michigan Biological Station (UMBS) where the majority of student research is conducted.

Doctoral students who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents at any accredited institution in the United States are eligible to apply to BART. Students who are accepted into the BART program receive up to two years of support including an annual stipend of $30,000, plus equipment and supply monies, support for travel to national conferences and two summer sessions at the UMBS. Universities are expected to cover tuition and fees for BART students.

BART fellows live at the Bio Station during the summer where they conduct their interdisciplinary research and participate in workshops, retreats and seminars. BART supports a broad range of projects, each with a clearly defined focus on one or more types of biosphere-atmosphere interactions. UMBS is equipped to support investigations addressing UV-B, ozone, elevated CO2, atmospheric chemistry, heavy metals, N compounds, acid precipitation, terrestrial, aquatic, and soil organisms and ecosystems, including microorganisms.

If you have questions concerning the program or would like additional information, please contact the BART Program Coordinator, Anne Fowler-Edin toll-free at 1-888-647-0536 or email  bartumbs@umich.edu or visit the BART website at https://www.lsa.umich.edu/umbs/bart. The deadline for applications is March 1st, 2007.

PLEASE NOTE: Biosphere-Atmosphere training need not be limited to Ph.D. candidates. Each summer, UMBS hosts Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU). With a focus on "Biosphere-Atmosphere Studies in a Global Environment," REU provides eight weeks of hands-on training in field biological and atmospheric science.
