We are seeking three research assistants for the summer of 2006 (May/June – Aug) to work at the University of Michigan Biological Station’s Forest Carbon Cycle Research Program (UMBS~Flux). UMBS~Flux is part of the AmeriFlux network responsible for measuring carbon fluxes from ecosystems across the Americas using micrometeorological techniques in conjunction with ecophysiological measurements. The work will involve setting up a large-scale, innovative ecosystem-level experiment in the forest of UMBS and includes measuring and identifying trees within defined plots, measuring soil processes, installing root observation tubes, as well as a number of other duties. The experiment is designed to measure carbon dioxide and water vapor fluxes and tree growth across a forest before and after removing all early successional tree species in a 30 ha area, thus accelerating succession which will result in a forest type that is predicted to dominate the upper Great Lakes region in the next 50 – 100 years. The successful applicants will live and dine at the Biological Station for the summer with a vibrant, intellectually stimulating, and diverse community of students, faculty, and researchers. Preferred applicants will have at least completed their sophomore year and be able to work independently both in the field and laboratory. Pay will be from $8.00 to $9.00 per hour and will not include housing or dining. For more information on UMBS~Flux visit http://www.biosci.ohio-state.edu/~pcurtis/UMBS~Flux/ or the AmeriFlux network web-site http://public.ornl.gov/ameriflux/ .
