Spotlight on "Student Success 2004" - September 2004
Darryl Anthony Boyd,
BS Chemistry-May 2004
Darryl is now studying Chemistry at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana. He is pursuing a Ph.D. in Chemistry and hopes to do disease research in the future. Darryl is also the recipient of a Sloan Fellowship. His advice to students is to simply stick to whatever your goals are. Furthermore, utilize ALL available resources; including, but not limited to, counselors, professors, graduates, and other people in your major. Finally, get to know the people in the CSP office, they can help you get where you want to go!
Below is a letter from Darryl to our staff
To the Staff at the CSP Office, I am writing this letter in order to express my extreme gratitude for all that the CSP office afforded me in my five years at the University of Michigan. Indeed, this letter alone will not be able to say all that it needs to say, for such a letter would be too expansive.
When I arrived at the University of Michigan, through the Bridge program, June 24, 1999, I must admit I was a bit frustrated. I was making "a lot of money" (working at McDonald's), and that summer was going to be awesome because it was going to very care-free as it was the transition period between High School and College. Well, Bridge brought my amazing summer to an immediate halt. Although I complained (along with the other 83 kids in Bridge that year) about coming to U of M so early, I believe most of us realized by August, what a great time we had; certainly we had great appreciation for the seven weeks we spent in a smoldering Mary Markley Residence Hall.
Since then, I have had the great pleasure of working with many of the Counselor's in the CSP office. Each one with their own unique abilities and specific focuses, yet all working toward the betterment of the students they advise. I certainly enjoyed the CSP classes I took, from Spanish, to English, to Math and even CSP 100. The faculty was amazing. Finally, I even enjoyed just wandering into the CSP office and chatting with the secretaries and anyone else that happened to be around at the time.
Now, I am off to Graduate School at Purdue University (Chemistry Ph D program, in case you're wondering), and I know that I owe much of my success to the faithful warriors that are connected to this office.
To each Counselor, Advisor, Program Director, Teacher, Secretary, and Office Worker, I'd just like to say thanks. Please do continue the fight. And don't let the complaints and frustrations of the students get you down. One day they will, as I did, get their minds right and realize the great asset that this program really is! Again, Thank You, and God Bless!!!
Sincerely,
Darryl Anthony Boyd
