Spotlight on "Student Success 2004" - November 2004

Alumni Corner

Elishae S. Johnson, May 2002 CSP Graduate B.A. in Communication.

From Tragedy to Triumph

Elishae is currently pursuing a Masters degree in Counseling from Spring Arbor University in Battle Creek, Michigan. She has completed 1 1/2 years and has one more year to completion. She has an interest in Adolescents, Juveniles, and Family Counseling.

Life after graduation has not been that simple for Elishae. On September 24, 2003 she was in a lifethreatening car accident and did not wake up for two days. Among her other injuries, her lungs collapsed and glass flew into her left eye. As a result of this accident, Elishae went through six months of therapy in order to regain her independence. She also lost vision in her left eye and is now adapted to wearing a prosthetic eye.

Elishae still remains the enthusiastic energetic person she was when she worked in the CSP office. During the Fall and Winter terms, she substitute teaches in the Battle Creek Public School System. During the Summer break, she stays active by teaching in the Upward Bound Summer Academy. She teaches sophomore and junior level English and Student Success classes.

After Elishae completes her Masters in Counseling she plans to go back to Law School and is very interested in pursuing Entertainment Law.

Her courage and ability to move on are an inspiration to us all, especially in these very difficult times we are living in. Thank you so much for sharing your story with us. We wish you the best in all of your future endeavors.

More News from Alumni.....

Dear CSP Students,

My time at the University of Michigan is an experience that I will never forget. Honestly, I had never really planned on going to Michigan for school, but I am happy with my decision to do so.

When I first arrived at Michigan, my plans were to major in microbiology with hopes of going on to medical school. I was unfamiliar with class scheduling and how many credits I should take as a freshman, all I knew was that I wanted to finish in four years, so I ended up with 16 credits my first semester of freshman year. As you can imagine, I was overloaded with work and I needed help. Someone told me about the Comprehensive Studies Program and that’s where I was able to get assistance.

My advisor was so much help. He lead me to different tutors to help me with my studies as well as study groups and programs that would be able to help me. CSP offered an array of information that I found very helpful. Even when I decided to change my major to history, my advisor and the CSP office were there to offer information about what I could do with my degree after graduation. Since graduation, I have moved to Atlanta, GA where I am currently teaching in an elementary school. My future plans include entering a graduate school in the fall of 2005 where I plan on getting my Masters in Educational Research and Development. With this degree, I hope to work with researchers and other professionals in the field of education to develop educational programs that will be implemented in the learning process of all students.

Sincerely,

Keosha Miller,
May 2004 CSP Graduate
B.A. History
Minor in Anthropology
