The Sweetland Writing Center supplements formal writing instruction by providing free programs that help students understand assignments, develop ideas, support arguments and claims, cite sources, and revise at the paragraph and sentence level.
For All Students
Sweetland Writing Workshop faculty are University of Michigan writing instructors who meet with students one-on-one to discuss their writing for UM courses and programs.
Writing References and Resources This list provides links to useful writing tools, such as printable handouts, podcasts, and a bibliography of online writing resources.
Services for non-native English speakers
While non-native English speakers are welcomed and encouraged to use all Sweetland services, those seeking more specialized help with second-language issues may benefit from the resources provided by our partner, the English Language Institute.
For Undergraduate Students Only
Peer Tutors are upper-level undergraduates who have received extensive training in working one-on-one with other students to help improve their writing skills. Undergraduates can visit the Peer Tutoring Centers on a walk-in basis during their hours of operation.
Online Writing Lab (OWL) Through submitting writing online, undergraduates receive comments and suggestions from trained Peer Tutors within 72 hours. This feedback helps students improve current papers, as well as their general writing skills.
For Graduate Students Only
Dissertation Writing Institute
This program helps graduate students in the process of dissertation writing by providing work time and space, a stipend, group discussion with other dissertation writers, and individual feedback.
Sweetland Fellows Seminar
The Sweetland Writing Center Fellows Seminar is designed to bring together graduate student instructors (Junior Fellows) and faculty (Senior Fellows) who share a commitment to integrating writing in their courses.
Graduate Student Writing Group: Pilot Program
In collaboration with Rackham, this fall semester the Sweetland Writing Center is piloting a Sweetland faculty-facilitated writing group. The students for this pilot program have already been selected.
