Students who are interested in teaching at the elementary level (grades K-8) complete all requirements for graduation while they are enrolled in the School of Education.  Successful completion of the program results in a State of Michigan provisional teaching certificate.

Students who are interested in teaching at the secondary level (grades 6-12) complete all requirements for graduation for one of the schools or colleges of the University of Michigan while at the same time satisfying School of Education requirements for a secondary-level teaching certificate.  Successful completion of the program results in a State of Michigan provisional teaching certificate.  Secondary certification students enrolled in LS&A have two options for completing teacher certification requirements:

  1. students may earn the A.B., B.S., or BGS degree and certification while remaining enrolled in LS&A; or
  2. students may transfer to the School of Education to earn the A.B.Ed. or B.S.Ed. degree and certification through that unit

Student’s who wish to pursue teacher certification after receiving a bachelor’s degree have two options:

  1. students may apply to be a second bachelor’s or certification only student in the School of Education; or
  2. students may apply for the Master of Arts with Certification (MAC) Program, a 12-month, intensive, full-time program that runs from June to June and results in a master of arts in education degree as well as teacher certification.
